Guy Mayeda MD FACC (Fellow of the American College of Cardiology), FSCAI (Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions) is an interventional cardiovascular specialist with additional expertise in endovascular interventions for coronary artery disease, critical limb ischemia, dialysis access shunt failures and aortic aneurysms/dissections.
Dr. Mayeda has always been fascinated by the intellectual challenge and emotional rewards of the medical profession. He considers it both a privilege and a great responsibility to have patients and their families entrust their lives to the care of a physician, often times a complete stranger at the time of the initial consultation. He chose his specialty because cardiovascular disease remains the number one cause of death and disability in America, although recent advancements in medical research and technology have grown exponentially making it possible to successfully treat patients who had been previously diagnosed as “incurable.”
Dr. Mayeda is proud to be part of a hospital based team that provides care for patients who have been deemed too ill or high-risk for conventional medical therapy. This team has the unique ability to evaluate and plan interventions using a multispecialty approach that includes treatments for multi-vessel coronary artery disease, structural heart disease and various vascular maladies.
According to Dr. Mayeda, “the most gratifying aspect of interventional cardiology is the ability to quickly intervene and treat patients with acute life-threatening illnesses and restore them to their former functional status, often within a few days.”
Dr. Mayeda’s patients would be surprised to learn that both his parents were incarcerated in a Japanese-American relocation camp in Arkansas during World War II. His father enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduating from high school in the relocation camp and fought with the 442nd infantry in Italy. His parents’ sacrifice and hard work allowed Dr. Mayeda and his three siblings to attend college and post graduate education.
When he was younger, Dr. Mayeda competed in triathlons and judo but “that was many years ago!” One of his favorite past recognitions was for “Best Handwriting” among the hospital medical staff (pre-dating the introduction of the EHR).
